- Hon. Haruna Maitala met his untimely death in a fatal road accident on his way to Jos
- The lawmaker will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 3, according to Islamic rites
A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Haruna Maitala, has passed on.
Maitala, representing Plateau Jos North/Bassa constituency in the House, was involved in a fatal car accident that claimed his life on Friday, April 2.
The Nation learnt that the lawmaker was on his way to Jos for his first son’s wedding holding on Sunday, April 4.
His son Jafaru, a legislative aide and his driver also lost their lives in the accident.
The lawmaker's death was announced in a statement released by his media consultant, Joseph Adudu.
Adudu disclosed that the rep member would be buried on Saturday morning according to Islamic rites.
He also offered prayers for the deceased, asking God to forgive his sins and grants him Aljanna fidau.
It was learnt by TheCable that the accident happened along the Abuja-Keffi road on Friday night.
According to a close ally he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, in Nasarawa state, around 11pm, but he did not make it.
The source stated:
“He was rushed to FMC Keffi but the doctors could not do much to save him."
Friends and family mourn
Condolence messages have already started pouring in as friends and family mourn the deceased.
Akim Aweng with the Twitter handle @aweng01 commented:
"Rest in peace Hon Haruna Maitala, even though I constantly criticized your style of representation, you were a friend to the family and a father, mentor to so many."
Genesis Bazalam with the handle @BazalamGenesis added:
"May the soul of Hon. Haruna Maitala, member representing Jos North and Bassa at National Assembly Abuja rest in peace. And may his immediate family and the good people of his constituents find solace in Almighty God."
Nigerian lawmaker dies after brief illness
This is coming barely a month after another lawmaker, Yuguda Hassan Kila, passed on.
Legit.ng had reported that Kila, a member representing Gwaram federal constituency at the House of Representatives died in the afternoon of Thursday, March 4, at the age of 70.
He breathed his last at the National Hospital, Abuja after a brief illness.
Kila was chairman of the House Committee on Customs.
