Hausa-Yoruba clash: Anxiety as Akeredolu issues 3 warnings to troublemakers in Shasha Ibadan

In his position as the chairman of the Southwest Governors' Forum (SWGF), Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, has dabbled into the mounting ethnic tension in Shasha community of Ibadan, Oyo state.

In a statement on Sunday, February 14, Governor Akeredou maintained that all hands must be on deck, warning that actions stoking ethnic tension in the southwest will not be condoned by the government.

It would be recalled that in a clash that trailed the farmer-herder crisis in Oyo state, aggrieved Hausa and Yoruba people on Saturday, February 13, attacked one another in a tragic uprising that led to wanton destruction.

Many shops, vehicles and goods worth millions were destroyed as the arsonists began to wield dangerous weapons on one another.

In the spirit of proactive leadership, Governor Akeredolu warned that "brigandage, jungle justice and unnecessary self-help" will not be allowed.

1. We do not identify with lawlessness, not even illegality

Warning against stoking ethnic tension, Governor Akeredolu said the southwest government will not condone to be associated with "lawlessness and illegality."

2. Citizens must remain law-abiding

Governor Akeredolu that in the "height of provocation", all citizens of the southwest must follow law and must not seek "unnecessary self-help."

3. Promise of peace

Governor Akeredolu, while commending his Oyo state counterpart Seyi Makinde for imposing a curfew on the troubled area, promised that peace will be brought back to "our lands."

Meanwhile, Sheu Sani has slammed Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi state, for defending and justifying Fulani herders carrying AK-47 rifles.

In a tweet on Friday, February 12, the former senator who represented Kaduna Central at the 8th Senate, said justifying bearing of the dangerous weapon by herdsmen "amounts to baptizing infamy."
