According to the report on Complete Sports citing Punch, Ndubuisi Egbo who was a member of the Super Eagles squad then explained that the players were exhausted before the penalties.

“We were not prepared for a penalty shootout because we came from a two-goal down to play 2-2 and we had exhausted a lot of energy and strength and the psychology was not well balanced for a penalty shootout, and in the end we lost.''

During his time with the Super Eagles, Egbo played 12 games for the three-time African champions between the year 1999-2002 and scored one goal as a goalkeeper.
