The lawmakers said the service chiefs need to be replaced with new ones with fresh ideas.

Offering a new perspective on the issue, Senator Shakarau said beyond the argument regarding their performance, the service chiefs have overstayed their years of service and as such, the laws guiding the scheme of service are being flouted.

He said:

“The President is breaking the law, the law says if you are 60 you must go, it is automatic.
“If you are 35-years in service, you must go. In fact, they are not staff of Mr. President, they are the staff of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and there is a rule."

The former two-term governor of Kano state said the military is governed by a scheme of service which includes when to leave automatically.

He added that none of the service chiefs has less than 35-years of service under their belt, a requirement which he says makes them eligible to have been retired.

What the president should do

Shekarau advised President Buhari to let service the chiefs go. He said the president should then hire them as either as minister of defence, adviser, among others if he found them indispensable.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian presidency has described as "out of place" the mounting demands for the sacking of the service chiefs over the spate of insecurity in the county.

Garba Shehu, senior media and publicity aide to President Buhari said this on Monday night, November 30.

Shehu said the service chiefs "serve at the pleasure of the president" and since President Buhari is satisfied with their performance, the calls for their sack is out of place.
