Meanwhile, the president in a separate letter, requested the upper legislative chamber to confirm Professor Abdullahi Abdu Zuru as the national commissioner representing the northwest in INEC.

Legit.ng recalls that until Yakubu is confirmed by the Nigerian Senate the professor will not be in charge of INEC.

He stepped aside temporarily after handing over leadership of the commission to Air Vice Marshal Muazu Ahmed (rtd), an INEC national commissioner.

Yakubu was reappointed by President Buhari for another tenure after the first one expired.

However, on Monday, November 9, at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, the electoral umpire revealed why he stepped aside.

According to him, it "will be inappropriate" to continue without the confirmation of the Nigerian Senate. emphasised that the constitution must be followed and obeyed, hence his temporary stepping aside.
