Coronavirus: 138 corps members have tested positive, says NCDC DG

- COVID-19 is still spreading across Nigeria despite various preventive measures put in place by the government

- No fewer than 138 corps members have reportedly contacted the virus

- The DG of the NCDC, however, indicated that the infection rate is low among the corps members, adding that those infected are not allowed into the camps

No fewer than 138 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu.

The Guardian reports that Ihekweazu disclosed this during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday, November 23, in Abuja.

The NCDC boss, however, added that none of the infected corps members was allowed into the orientation camps.

He said the corps members are either being managed at home or in a treatment centre.

The NCDC boss said a total of 34,785 corps members and members of the camp communities had been so far tested.

He noted that the 138 confirmed cases indicate 0.4 per cent prevalence.

Also reporting the same incident, Nigerian Tribune stated that the management of the NYSC had earlier denied that any corps member contracted COVID-19.

According to the latest data from the NCDC, Nigeria has recorded 66,439 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and 62,241 recoveries and 1,168 deaths.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that a coronavirus vaccine being developed in the United Kingdom to fight COVID-19 had proved to be effective.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca announced their vaccine can prevent 70.4% of people from getting coronavirus.

According to them, the coronavirus vaccine is 90% effective if a lower dose is used.

This was coming after two companies in the United States, Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna announced that their vaccine is also effective against the deadly virus.

Making its announcement on Monday, November 16, Moderna stated that early results of its experimental vaccine have shown to be 94.5 % effective.

Early data released by the company showed the effectiveness of the experimental vaccine in a clinical trial with more than 30,000 participants.
