COVID-19: Moderna says vaccine against virus is 94.5% effective

- Another pharm*ceutical company, Moderna, has announced that its COVID-19 vaccine has been found to be 94.5% effective

- Moderna is now the second US pharm*ceutical company to release data on a vaccine against the dreaded coronavirus

- The first was Pfizer/BioNTech which announced that its vaccine was 90% effective

A report by Aljazeera indicates that another vaccine being developed to help in the fight against COVID-19 has proved to be effective. The vaccine gainst the global pandemic is being developed by Moderna, a US company.

The pharma*ceutical company made the announcement on Monday, November 16, adding that early results of its experimental vaccine have shown to be 94.5 % effective.

The manufacturer went on to explain that its first analysis was based on 95 cases of COVID-19 that included 15 adults aged 65 or over, and 20 participants from diverse communities.

Legit.ng gathers that early data of the vaccine released from the company showed the effectiveness of the experimental vaccine in a clinical trial with more than 30,000 participants.

Once it has more safety data, Moderna is expected to seek emergency use authorisation from the US Food and Drug Administration.

President Donald Trump also shared the news on his Twitter handle. He wrote:

"Another Vaccine just announced. This time by Moderna, 95% effective. For those great “historians”, please remember that these great discoveries, which will end the China Plague, all took place on my watch!"

This is exciting news for a lot of people who cannot wait for the deadly virus to be a thing of the past. On of those who have reacted is the daughter of the US president, Ivanka Trump. According to her, her father partnered with Moderna to create it sometime in January.

Morderna has been hailed for the achievement on social media.

Eric Topol with the Twitter handle @EricTopol wrote:

Very exciting to see 94% efficacy of @moderna_tx #SARSCoV2 vaccine at interim analysis of 95 events. This replication of Pfizer's high efficacy tells us the virus is eminently vaccinatable."

Derek Lowe with the handle @Dereklowe wrote on Twitter:

"Absolutely wonderful news from Moderna: 94% vaccine efficacy, zero severe coronavirus cases, no severe adverse events, and one-month stability under standard refrigeration.
"We’re winning. Hang on, hang on, hang on and stay safe. We’re going to win."

Eugene Gu, MD with the handle @eugenegu commented:

This is coming less than a week after Pfizer/BioNTech announced its vaccine which is 90% effective against the deadly virus.

According to the company, findings have shown that the vaccine does not have serious side-effects.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the working coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer/BioNTech would be sold at different prices between countries and regions.

In a related development, President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed the arrival of the first effective COVID-19 vaccine after a successful human trial phase.

While describing it as a major milestone, Buhari went on to call for equal distribution and access to the vaccine.
