COVID-19: Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine shows up to 90% efficacy in preventing virus

A report by The Guardian UK indicates that a coronavirus vaccine being developed in the UK to fight against COVID-19 has proved to be effective.

The news media reported that Oxford University and AstraZeneca announced their vaccine can prevent 70.4% of people from getting coronavirus.

According to the data released by the company, the coronavirus vaccine is 90% effective if a lower dose is used. Also, there are early indications it might also help stop the spread of the deadly virus.

The manufacturer went on to note that the jab is effective in preventing many people from getting sick.

Legit.ng gathered that an interim analysis based on 131 infections from the vaccine's phase 3 trial showed that the efficacy of the vaccine is 70%.

This was the combination of the results from two different doses, one of which was 90% and the other was 62%. The 90% involved a half-dose of the vaccine first and then a full dose later.

This is exciting news for a lot of people who cannot wait for the deadly virus to be a thing of the past. One of those is the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

The prime minister noted that though there are further safety checks, the announcement is exciting news.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca have been hailed for the achievement on social media.

Richard Horton with the handle @richardhorton1 wrote on Twitter:

"The phase II results of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine are here. Extremely encouraging news. It’s hard to believe we have got to this point in <12 months. Unbelievable levels of global collaboration."

Killua with the handle @hanzbbyy commented:

Antoinette Sandbach with the Twitter handle @Sandbach wrote:

"Great news that #oxfordvaccine is so #effective and it’s ability to be stored at lower temperatures is a bonus as it can be rolled out more quickly without specialist freezers."

This is coming after two US companies, Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna announced that their vaccine is effective against the deadly virus.

Moderna who made its announcement on Monday, November 16, stated that early results of its experimental vaccine have shown to be 94.5 % effective.

Early data of the vaccine released from the company showed the effectiveness of the experimental vaccine in a clinical trial with more than 30,000 participants.

Pfizer/BioNTech, on the other hand, announced its vaccine is 90% effective against the deadly virus.

According to the company, findings have shown that the vaccine does not have serious side-effects.
