A Nigerian teacher, Olasunkanmi Opeifa, has been named a top 10 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize 2020.

The $1 million (N383,540,000) award was established by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Stephen Fry, one of the judges that shortlisted Opeifa expressed gratitude to the Opeifa for reaching more students beyond his community by publishing a book on learning English.

According to Fry, the Nigerian teacher introduced free weekend tutorials in order to cover the syllabus with his students.

The judge said Opeifa's contribution has improved examination results and students are able to meet the benchmark for admission to university.

Opeifa is an English teacher from Government Day Secondary School, Karu, Abuja.

Global Teacher Prize ceremony will be held virtually on December 3, 2020, where the overall winner will be announced.

In other news, a 23-year-old Nigerian writer identified as Innocent Chizaram Ilo has won the 2020 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Africa region.

The young man's short story titled When a Woman Renounces Motherhood won him the prize.

Ilo, who is the youngest writer to be awarded the African region prize since the establishment of the Commonwealth prize in 2012, will be receiving £2,500 and a publication with Granta.

The chair of the judging panel, Ghanaian writer Nii Parkes, commended the story for its “particularly striking confidence switching between languages and Mr Ilo’s unapologetic use of interspersed, un-italicized Igbo and pidgin".
