- The battle line has been drawn between Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his Rivers counterpart, Nyesom Wike
- Akeredolu and the APC in Ondo have warned Wike not to try to influence the governorship poll through any means
- Akeredolu reminded Governor Wike that Ondo is not River state
The Ondo state government has sent a warning message to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state ahead of the October 10 gubernatorial election.
Through the commissioner for Donald Ojogor, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu vowed that the state will do everything to stop Wike from asserting his influence in the election.
Wike had alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC working with the state government is mounting pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) so as to manipulate the poll.
Rejecting and dismissing this claim, Akeredolu remind the southeast governor that Ondo is not River and that the state government and people of Ondo will resist him.
The statement read:
“In all aspects, Governor Wike deserves respect not just as governor but as a critical stakeholder in the democratic journey. He has his inalienable rights as a citizen to express his mind and make comments about whatever he feels strongly about.
“However, what amuses us is his imperious attitude and recourse to spurious allegations just because of an election. He should know that the people of the Ondo State who have a history of rejecting external influence and domination, will resist his attempt to play the role of a godfather in Ondo state. Ondo is not Rivers.
“The man ought to know that utterances of public office holders must be measured and their delivery ought to be in line with the mood of the people. The people of the state will resist Wike here even if he had roared elsewhere successfully. For emphasis, his imperialistic approach is most unfortunate and very unbecoming.”
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari had been urged to help end the violence in Ondo as political parties carry out their campaigns ahead of the governorship poll.
The call was made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a statement by its spokesman in Ondo, Kennedy Ikantu Peretei.
The PDP in its message to the president accused the APC and Akeredolu of promoting electoral violence through political thugs.
The opposition party also called out the service chiefs for ignoring this worrisome development in the state.
