COVID-19: FG ends evacuation flights from US as 208 Nigerians arrive home

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has said the last evacuation flight from the United States will arrive with Ethiopian Airlines ET. 509 on Friday, August 21.
The commission, which made the disclosure on its official Twitter page, said the flight departed on Thursday, August 20, by 9:51 pm and is estimated to arrive Abuja by 12:41 pm on Friday, August 21.

According to NIDCOM, after arriving in Abuja by 12.41 pm, the flight will arrive Lagos by 2:31 pm on the same day.
The plane, which took off from Newark, New Jersey, has 87 males, 111 females and 10 infants onboard.
Abuja-bound passengers are 89 in number while 119 passengers are flying to Lagos.
The commission wrote: "This last flight brought the total number of stranded Nigerians evacuated from the USA to 2,322 returnees."

Recall that ahead of the reopening of Nigeria’s airspace for international travel, the federal government on Monday, August 17, announced that it would end evacuation flights of Nigerians abroad.
The chairman, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, who disclosed this during the daily briefing in Abuja said the evacuation would end on Saturday, August 22, to give international airports sufficient time in preparation to reopen.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) also noted that a number of countries have signified intention to repatriate Nigerians convicted, pardoned and paroled.
Mustapha went on to note that the PTF has continued to observe the decline in fatalities, high discharge rates and consistent under 500 daily cases of infections recorded for the past four weeks.
The SGF, who explained that Nigeria as a country should not and would not lower its guard, urged the people to improve their compliance with the various safety protocols at all levels.
