Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has set eyes on beating Lionel Messi to the Spanish League top scorer prize at the end of the season.

The Frenchman scored twice against Villarreal to help Los Blancos win their 34th La Liga title a few days back - taking his tally to 21 goals in 36 topflight appearances.

He currently trails the Barcelona legend with just goals and the 32-year-old is confident he can beat the Argentine who has 23 goals from 32 matches to the award.

While Benzema recorded eight assists from the number of games listed above, Messi created 21 chances for his teammates to score.

The six-time Ballon d'Or has won the Pichichi trophies six times with his fierce rival Cristiano Ronaldo winning three and Luis Suarez topping just once in the last 10 editions of the award.

Benzema's highest goal in a season came in 2016 when he scored 24 goals and he would hope to better that number to stand a chance for the gong.

Meanwhile, Real president Florentino Perez called believes the Frenchman deserves to win the Ballon d’Or after he scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season against Villarreal.

Spanish defender Sergio Ramos has also urged the Galacticos to hand the striker a new contract and keep him at the Bernabeu beyond 2022.
