Edo 2020: Wike says Obaseki will be welcomed to PDP if he defects

Day after receiving Governor Godwin Obaseki at Rivers state Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Nyesom Wike has reacted to rumours of the Edo governor's planned defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking to newsmen on Monday, June 15, Governor Wike said no decision of such was taken during their private meeting on Sunday, TVC News reports.

The Rivers state governor, however, said Governor Obaseki will be welcomed to PDP.

He also added that the choice of who eventually emerges the PDP governorship candidate in the forthcoming governorship election would depend on the Edo state chapter of the party.

Wike also lashed out at the Nigerian Governors Forum for allegedly failing to condemn the APC's disqualification of Governor Obaseki.

The Rivers state governor also criticized the APC governors for allegedly abandoning Obaseki for fear of suffering a similar fate.

He described the reason for the disqualification of the sitting Governor as unfortunate.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Rivers state governor alleged that his Edo state counterpart was disqualified by someone who does not have a certificate.

"Obaseki was disqualified by someone who doesn't have a certificate, what an irony!" Governor Wike tweeted.

The Rivers state governor's tweet has generated heated reactions on Twitter.

"That's what Nigeria politics is all about, those that have certificate serves those that doesn't have. Corrupt government," Success Mark said.

Sir Ferdinand Rogers said: "Oshiomohle studied in Oxford College. he is more Educated than you, Obaseki and Atiku combined. You can't even stand in a debate, talkless of talk show."

In a similar development, Timi Frank has called on Governor Wike of Rivers state to prevail on PDP leaders to accept Governor Obaseki as their governorship candidate.

Frank who is a former chieftain of the APC said Obaseki remains the best option for the Peoples Democratic Party if it truly wants to take over Edo state.

Frank urged Wike to make those against Obaseki's defection to see reasons why the Edo governor should be given a chance.

He warned that the PDP may lose the forthcoming governorship election if it refuses to accept Obaseki as its candidate.

The former APC chieftain also advised Governor Obaseki to reach out to more PDP stakeholders to facilitate his acceptance by the opposition party.
