Edo guber: INEC approves direct primaries for APC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the direct primaries mode for the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Edo State governorship election.
This was disclosed via the electoral body's Twitter page on Tuesday, June 9.
“By the timetable and schedule of activities issued by the commission on 6 February 2020, party primaries for the Edo governorship election will take place between 2 and 27 June 2020,” the notice posted on INEC's Twitter page read.
It continued: “The commission appeals to the various political parties to conduct their primaries in full compliance with the 1999 constitution and electoral act 2010 (as amended), regulations and guidelines for the conduct of political party primaries (2018) and the INEC policy on conducting elections in the context COVID-19 pandemic of 21st May 2020.”
With the stance of the electoral commission, incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, may have lost out in his bid to get the ruling party's ticket.
Obaseki has been canvassing for an indirect primary, while his predecessor and national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole have been advocating for direct primary.
The duo have been at loggerheads over the soul of the party in the south-south state.

Meanwhile, an aspirant in the forthcoming Edo state governorship election under the APC, Engineer Chris Ogiemwonyi has said that Governor Obaseki should not be allowed to fly the party’s flag during the September 19 election.
Ogiemwonyi, a former minister of state for works, said the governor was foisted on Edo people in 2016, adding that he does not deserve a second term in office if the state must progress.
According to him, Governor Obaseki was not in the political calculation in Edo state in 2016, until Oshiomhole, then state governor, supported him.
Despite Ogiemwonyi's stance, a group of professionals known as Edo Good Governance Group (E3G) have backed Governor Obaseki in his ongoing effort to return for a second term.
After a meeting on Wednesday, June 3, the group called on all Edo people to rally round the governor to ensure that Oshiomhole, “does not impose his cronies on the state through an ambush.”
