Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo on Monday, January 27 said Nigeria should have harnessed the engineering and technological ingenuity that emanated from the defunct Republic of Biafra during the civil war.
Osinbajo who lamented the inability of Nigeria to leverage on the prowess of Biafran engineers stated that the defunct Project Development Agency (PRODA), Enugu would have served the purpose but it was not to be.
He expressed the regret at a town hall meeting at the National Museum, Umuahia organised by the Ken Nnamani Centre for Leadership and Development to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Nigeria civil war.
The vice president, however, harped on the need to forge national unity and cohesion decades after the war.
He urged Nigerians “to discard the bitterness of the past and look forward to a united Nigeria.”
According to him, “no human relationship is perfect and the ties that bind us have survived intense disagreements.”
Earlier, the founder of the Ken Nnamani Centre for Leadership and Development and former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, called on leaders to treat every part of Nigeria with fairness and not to sow seeds of discord.
On his part, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state called on the federal government to pay particular attention to the development of infrastructure in the south-east in the spirit of genuine reconciliation.
President Muhammadu Buhari recently marked the 50th year anniversary of the Nigerian civil war via a statement by his spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu.
The president stated that there were no victors in the war which claimed over a million lives.
