PDP alleges plot to rig Akwa-Ibom local govt rerun poll

- The PDP says there are plans to disrupt the rerun election in Akwa Ibom state scheduled to hold this weekend

- The party fingered the APC and a top police officer as the arrowheads of the alleged plot

- The PDP warned that the plan would have dire consequences and urged the IFGP to intervene

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that there are plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unleash violence on the people and rig the re-run the election in Essien Udim local government of Akwa Ibom state slated for Saturday, January 25.

A statement by the PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan on Thursday, January 23, alleged that there are plans to invade the local government, unleash unbridled violence and manipulate the electoral process in favour of the APC.

The party said it already has intelligence on how a serving minister on President Muhammadu Buhari's cabinet has allegedly compromised a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police to carry out the plan.

The PDP stated that the plot also seeks to transfer the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Mike Igini and replace him with an already compromised official.

“We are concerned about the plot to deploy a huge number of policemen into a local government and put them under the control of such an officer as a DIG is extremely suspect.

“Any attempt by the APC to invade the local government to rig this election will indeed attract dire consequences,” the PDP alleged.

The PDP, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to wade into the situation, saying it would avert an imminent crisis.

Recall that the minister of Niger Delta affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has since pulled out of the planned Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial re-run election.

In a letter addressed to the national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Akpabio said as a minister, a huge responsibility had been placed on him.
