Christopher Tolkien: Son of 'Lord of the Rings' author dies at 95

Christopher Tolkien, the son of "The Lord of the Rings" author JRR Tolkien, has died at the age of 95 years.

Christopher edited much of JRR's works published posthumously after his death in 1973, including The Silmarillion.

Publisher HarperCollins said Christopher edited or oversaw the publication of 24 editions of his father's works.

CNN reports that the disclosure was made by the Tolkien Society, which said Christopher would be sorely missed.

Legit.ng gathers that Christopher was born in Leeds, England, on November 21, 1942, and grew up in Oxford.

In the Tolkien Society's statement, Dimitra Fimi, said: "Tolkien studies would never be what it is today without Christopher Tolkien's contribution.

"From editing 'The Silmarillion' to the mammoth task of giving us the 'History of Middle-earth' series, he revealed his father's grand vision of a rich and complex mythology."

Charlie Redmayne, chief executive officer of Haper Collins UK, said it was an honour and privilege to know and work with Christopher.

He said: "The most charming of men, and a true gentleman, it was an honor and privilege to know and work with him and our thoughts are with his family at this time."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the nominations for the 2020 Oscar had been announced, with Joker leading with 11 nominations, while The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood earned 10 nominations each.

The 2020 Oscar will honour the best films of 2019 and will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

Joker is up for best picture, best director and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix, plus eight other awards.
