The United States' Senate will likely start the impeachment of President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, January 21, weeks after the House of Representatives concluded its own process.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate’s majority leader, spoke about the planned move on Tuesday, January 14.

NBC News reports McConnell as saying, however, that the launch of the impeachment would largely depend on the submission of the two articles upon which the House took an action against Trump.

He said the articles are being expected from Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"The House is likely to finally send the articles over to us tomorrow (Wednesday, January 15), and we'll be able to - we believe if that happens - in all likelihood, go through some preliminary steps here this week,” McConnell said.

The Senate’s majority leader added that the steps would include the chief justice being invited to swear in members of the upper chamber.

The senator said currently, he is being supported by 53 Republican colleagues on the best way to move forward, with the first measure being setting up arguments for the prosecution and defence.

The report notes that McConnell appears disposed to inviting Hunter, son of former Vice President Joe Biden, but that is if Democrats decided on getting the former White House national security adviser John Bolton.

"I can't imagine that only the witnesses that our Democratic colleagues would want to call will be called," the senator said.
