Queen Elizabeth II has announced that she will be backing up Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step down as senior members of the Royal Family.

The queen in a statement to British media houses on Monday, January 13, said that she and the Royal family were fully in support of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's move.

In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, the queen and her entire family agreed to a period of transition during which the Sussex Royals will split their time between Canada and the UK.

"Today my family had a very constructive discussion on the future of my grandson and his family. My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family," read the statement.

According to the queen, they would have preferred the Sussex Royals to remain as full-time working members of the Royal Family.

"Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family," she added.

The queen further said the matter was a complex one and talks were underway and a final decision would be reached out soon.

“These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days," she said.

The statement came days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their desire to be fully independent through an Instagram post.

Harry and Meghan announced their desire to step down on Wednesday, January 8.

According to the couple, they said they wanted to focus more on their independent work between the UK and North America.

"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages," they said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Prince William and Prince Harry both came out on a united front to debunk the statement that there is a rift between them.
