Governors playing politics with southwest security outfit, Amotekun - Gani Adams

- The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has accused southwest governors of playing politics with the yet to be inaugurated Amotekun

- Iba Adams said the governors are currently recruiting those considered as their errand boys rather than people who are vast in security operations

- The Aare Ona Kakanfo warned that the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) should not be blamed if Amotekun fails

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has warned that the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) should not be blamed if Amotekun, the security outfit being initiated by governors from the southwest, fails.

Adams, in an interview with Daily Independent, said the governors, led by Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, had not consulted him and the OPC, an organization he heads, even though reports had claimed that the latter would be involved in securing the zone.

The Aare also said ahead of the unveiling of the security outfit, which is slated for January 9, the governors have started recruiting directly into Amotekun while he had been tossed.

“I spoke with Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state five days ago and he told me that the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission will liaise with us.

“I then called the director-general of the DAWN Commission, Seye Oyeleye, but he also told me that the issue of recruitment is not in their hands. He added that the state governors are the ones handling that,” Adams complained.

He said he would not have been bothered if the OPC was not mentioned as a part of the outfit adding that he had been receiving calls from people concerned about their preparedness for take-off.

“We now realise that if we don’t clear our name in public opinion and for the sake of history, if this operation fails, people will be putting the blame on the Aare Ona Kakanfo and saying things like ‘So, you are not even capable to function in your office as the Yoruba generalissimo?'” He said.

While announcing that the OPC is not involved in the recruitment of personnel into Amotekun, Adams said he heard that the governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun, has reportedly started recruiting 430 people from vigilante groups.

He described those being recruited as political errand boys to the governors.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Iba Adams and other leaders recently met gave their nod to the new initiative, saying they were ready to complement the efforts of the southwest governors and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on their plan to make the zone safe for the people.
