Sowore: Falana says Malami cannot wash his hands off activist's detention

- A senior lawyer, Femi Falana, insists the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, bears responsibility for Omoyele Sowore’s detention in DSS custody

- Falana says since Malami took over the criminal case from the DSS he is deemed to possess the constitutional powers in full and the responsibility for any decision rests solely on him

- The senior lawyer asks Malami to direct the Department of Security Service (DSS) to release Sowore without any further delay

A senior lawyer, Femi Falana, has said the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, cannot distance himself from the detention of Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Security Service (DSS).

Channels TV reports that Falana said since Malami took over the criminal case from the DSS, he is deemed to possess the constitutional powers in full and the responsibility for any decision thereupon rests solely on him.

The lawyer insisted that having taken over the case the AGF cannot he cannot like Pontius Pilate wash off his hands off the illegal detention of Sowore by the DSS.

Since Mr Malami has taken over the case of FRN v Sowore v Another he is deemed to possess “the constitutional powers in full and the responsibility for any decision thereupon rests solely on him. Therefore, he cannot like Pontius Pilate wash off his hands with respect to the illegal detention of Sowore by the State Security Service," Falana said.

Falana asked Malami to direct DSS to release Sowore without any further delay.

Meanwhile, added to his troubles with the DSS, Omoyele Sowore is on the verge of facing charges bordering on alleged links to terrorist groups in the country.

This is as officials of the DSS recently interrogated Sowore over his possible links with proscribed armed groups like Boko Haram, Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and the Indigenous People Of Ibo (IPOB).

A source, who is conversant with Sowore's court case, revealed that he was questioned by security personnel on the issue.
