While participating at the 2019 general assembly of the United Nations, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, September 23, in New York paid a courtesy call on the head of the 74th edition of the event, Prof Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.
A statement by Femi Adesina, the president's spokesperson, said Buhari told Muhammad-Bande that the latter bears a heavyweight on his shoulders and that Nigeria was solidly behind him in the onerous task.
The statement describes Muhammad-Bande as a Nigerian diplomat, who was earlier in the year unanimously elected as president of the general assembly for one year.
Buhari was quoted as saying: “I sincerely congratulate you. Your election was well received by the whole world. It was unanimous support, and the global community received you well.
"That support puts a heavy weight on you, and I wish you well."
In his response, Professor Muhammad-Bande said he was delighted to receive the Nigerian President, “along with your team of professionals and politicians.”
He told Buhari that his nomination by the president is the greatest honour he has had.
