Xenophobia: We must stop barking - Shehu Sani tackles FG, African governments over attacks

- Senator Shehu Sani has condemned the killing of Nigerians and other Africans by South African natives in the country

- Sani called on all African leaders and heads of state to end the continued xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa

- According to the former Nigerian lawmaker, a ‘South Africa-Nigeria Joint Cultural Exchange Council’ which would promote people to people contact and neutralize xenophobia should be established

A former Nigerian lawmaker and senator who represented Kaduna Central in the eighth Senate, Shehu Sani, has called on all African leaders and heads of state to end the continued xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa.

Sani, who was a former vice chairman on the Senate committee on foreign affairs and the executive director of the African Centre for Peace and Development said the continuous attacks against Nigerians in South Africa stands unreservedly condemned.

In a statement received by Legit.ng, the former lawmaker said the government of the Republic of South African must protect all Nigerian nationals and frontally combat xenophobia.

He also warned that the historic relationship between Nigeria and South Africa must not be destroyed by the unwholesome activities of criminal elements in the country.

Sani said: "While we condemned the attacks on Nigerian businesses in South Africa, I call on our fellow citizens not to attack South African businesses in Nigeria."

The former lawmaker also called for the establishment of a ‘South Africa-Nigeria Joint Cultural Exchange Council’ which would promote people to people contact and neutralize the monster of xenophobia.

"South African Government should compensate Nigerians who made loses during the attacks. South African Government must bring to book the perpetrators of the xenophobic attacks," Sani said.

Sani also urged the Nigerian government not to sit back and watch the attacks on its citizens but to take punitive measures aimed at ensuring an end to the attacks on Nigerians by South Africa

"Nigerian government should not continue to bark like a coward dog and South African government should not continue to sleep like a tortoise while innocent people are being killed."

"Africans unleashing violence against fellow Africans on the African soil is a shame to Africans and the black race.Xenophobia is urinating and spitting on the graves of the African Union and those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and independence of the African continent," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a Nigerian lady, Meg Ricketts, embarked on a solo protest against the killing of Nigerians in South Africa.
