FG to commence competency, qualification tests for civil servants

- Winifred Oyo-Ita, head of civil service of the federation, says the government is set to commence verification of workers' qualifications

- Oyo-Ita claims that the federal civil service is seriously challenged and has not met its real goals

- The head of service laments that over the years, there has been lack of structured training programmes and this has increased the challenges

Federal workers in Nigeria would now face a compulsory competence assessment test to authenticate their qualifications, effectiveness and suitability for their jobs, the head of civil service of the federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, has said.

The competency test, according to Oyo-Ita, was designed by the federal government.

Daily Trust reports that the head of service spoke in Abuja on Monday, July 29, at the formal launch of the Redesigned Training Modules on Structured Mandatory Assessment-Based Training Programme (SMART-P) and the Leadership, Enhancement Advancement Development Programme (LEAD-P).

It was learnt that Oyo-Ita noted that Nigerian workers may lack the requisite skills to drive the economy and sustain the ongoing reforms conceived to repositioning the civil service if they do not undergo the training.

“Over the years, the absence of structured and targeted training programmes for civil servants has been a major challenge to the federal civil service.

“Training activities across the MDAs have hitherto been carried out haphazardly without considering the actual competencies lacking in the service,” he said adding that this approach had exacerbated the knowledge and skills gap in the service.

Oyo-Ita noted further that despite the series of training programmes going on across the civil service, workers still lacked the requisite knowledge and skills required for their jobs.

“In most cases, training modules are filled with contents that are mere routine and academic as they were not based on the real work place requirements,” Oyo-Ita said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Oyo-Ita had debunked reports claiming that N16 billion meant for Civil Servants Group Life Insurance Scheme (GLIS) was stolen in her office.
