Ruga: Anambra govt to assist farmers willing to breed “Igbo specie cows”

- The Anambra govt says it will provide aid for farmers willing to venture into full scale cattle breeding; especially those willing to breed the Igbo specie cow known as Efi Igbo

- The state’s agriculture commissioner said the state govt is ready to make a serious business out of livestock grazing; especially the rearing of Efi Igbo

- A businessman, Ugochukwu Okpalaeke, also urged south-east governors to aid farmers venture into the cattle breeding business; particularly, the Igbo specie of cattle

The Anambra State Government has stated that it would provide aid for farmers in the state willing to venture into full scale cattle breeding; especially those willing to breed the Igbo specie cow popularly known as Efi Igbo.

The disclosure was made over the weekend by the state’s commissioner for agriculture, mechanization processing and export, Nnamdi Onukwuba, during a visit to the Eagle Food Processing Industries in Umuchu, Aguata LGA, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the commissioner said the state government, led by Willie Obiano, was ready to make a serious business out of livestock grazing; especially the rearing of Efi Igbo.

He further disclosed that plans are already being made by the state government to expand cattle grazing across the state’s local government areas.

The commissioner also lauded the founder and managing director of the processing industries, Prince Ugochukwu Okpalaeke, for his efforts in achieving the feat in food processing which he described as the “most important area of agriculture”.

He said: “I’m marvelled to see a farmer with hundreds of thousands of birds, a palm produce processing factory with cattle and other things in his farm coupled with hundreds of workers as employees in his payroll.”

On his part, Okpalaeke urged south-east governors to aid farmers venture into the cattle breeding business; particularly, the Igbo specie of cattle.

He said: “Farmers have the intention and capability to breed cattle but they are nowhere near what it takes to do the business in terms of facilities like land, man power and funding.

“Rich men in virtually every place in Igbo land are acquiring lands for other businesses against the interest of all important agricultural development at this point in time.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the South -East Governors’ Forum said the federal government had no gazetted land in their territory for Ruga settlements, cattle colonies or any given nomenclature.

The disclosure was made by the chairman of the forum and governor of Ebonyi, Dave Umahi, via his media aide, Emma Uzo.

Umahi said the federal government had not been given any land for Ruga settlements by Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia and Imo states.
