N30k allowance: We will communicate to corps members - NYSC DG

- Corps members will be informed when payment of the new N30,000 allowance will commence, NYSC DG has said

- This is coming following the government's approval of N30,000 minimum wage

- According to the NYSC DG, the scheme has recorded successes in the use of FOIA

Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim who is the director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said that corps members will be promptly updated when the payment of the N30,000 new allowance takes off.

The Nation reports that Ibrahim spoke in Abuja at a workshop/training on Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for desk officers of the NYSC.

Asked when the payment of N30,000 allowance for corps members would take off, he said: “They will be communicated accordingly, please.”

He said the workshop was aimed at consolidating on the successes recorded by the NYSC on the use of the FOIA.

Ibrahim said: “Since the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act in 2011, the NYSC has been in the forefront of ensuring total compliance with the provisions of the Act.”

Meanwhile, in a bid to guard against age falsification said to be rampant among academic institutions, the NYSC said that it will start including the date of birth of corps members on its certificate.

The NYSC's boss disclosed that its resolve was influenced by the West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) and the scheme’s exemption certificate which included the dates of birth of the holders.

Ibrahim said the increasing number of institutions churning out corps member added to the “attendant rise in corps members’ population pose a great challenge which we must address.”
