Benue youths protest alleged police brutality, bias

- Youths in Benue state have accused the police of supporting Senator George Akume against Governor Samuel Ortom

- The youths are also calling on President Buhari to direct the IG of police to withdraw the police from the Benue state House of Assembly

Benue state youths have stormed the streets in the state capital to protest against what they described as police brutality and biasness of the police to Governor Samuel Ortom over his dispute with Senator George Akume.

The youths accused the police of partisanship in the political crisis between Ortom, Akume and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Channels TV reports.

The youths stormed the streets on Wednesday, August 1 to show their support for Governor Ortom who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to urgently withdraw the police from the Benue State House of Assembly Complex.

The youths claimed that the police presence at the Assembly complex is intimidating the lawmakers and preventing them from doing their jobs properly.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Nigerian police of being an interested party in the alleged plot to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state.

The party in a tweet on Monday, July 30, said eight lawmakers loyal to former governor, George Akume, were escorted into the state House of Assembly complex by the police, while 17 others believed to be PDP members were barred from the complex.
