6 reportedly die as passenger boat capsizes in Rivers

No fewer than six people were killed on Saturday, July 28 when a passenger boat capsized along the Abonnema-Bakana waterways in Degema, Rivers state.

Punch reports that the boat was conveying 25 passengers from Abonnema wharf to Bakana before the accident happened.

Legit.ng gathers that a source who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that 19 persons had been rescued while six passengers were feared dead.

The source said: “The passenger boat was moving from Abonnema wharf in Port Harcourt to Bakana in Degema local government area and the accident happened between 2pm and 3pm today (Saturday).

“Twenty-five passengers were on board. At least 19 persons have been rescued and there is the possibility that six persons may have died after the boat capsized.”

The incident was confirmed by the state police public relations officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who said that the number of casualties could not be immediately ascertained.

He said: “The DPO within the area where the incident happened, has confirmed the incident. But what he has is still sketchy, particularly as it concerns the number of casualties of the boat accident.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that no fewer than five people were killed after a boat capsized mid-sea in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state while traveling from Lagos Island on Wednesday, July 25.

The corpses of the victims, four male and one female, were deposited at the morgue of the Ikorodu General Hospital. The incident was confirmed by the general manager of the Lagos State Emergency and Management Agency, Adesina Tiamiyu.
