Family is everywhere: Nigerian Wits graduate finds ‘family’ in SA

- Sarah Blessed-Sayah came to Wits from Nigeria for a postgraduate diploma

- She met Ameeta Merhoye, who became her "South African mom"

- Although her parents weren't able to attend her graduation, Ameeta was there for her

Sarah Blessed-Sayah might not have had her parents from Nigeria around when she graduated from Wits University recently, but she was happy that her South African "mom" was there.

The young student from Nigeria graduated with a postgraduate certificate in education, Legit.ng learned.

When she first arrived in South Africa in 2017, she lost her luggage and was worried about being in a foreign country with no family.

Thankfully, she met Ameeta Merhoye, a teaching experience administrator in the Wits School of Education.

She helped Sarah settle in well and the two soon became family. Sarah explained: "She's my South African mom."

So when Sarah finally graduated, Ameeta was more than happy to be there for her and even shed a tear or two.

Speaking to Wits University's press team, Ameeta proudly revealed that her "daughter" graduated with a distinction. Sarah is now starting her honours degree and will begin her master's degree in 2019.

Some inspiring stories have emerged from the recent graduation ceremonies at Wits University.
