Leah Sharibu: Negotiation with Boko Haram has been torturous - FG

The federal government has revealed that it has not forgotten Leah Sharibu in the hands of Boko Haram terrorists revealing that negotiation has been torturous.

Tribune reports that this was revealed by the minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed.

Leah who clocked 15 on Monday, May 13, was kidnapped alongside other Dapchi girls but while the rest were rescued, she was kept by the terrorists for allegedly refusing to renounce her Christianity faith.

The mister said the government was working to see to her rescued in spite of the difficulty in the negotiation.

He said: : “I think Mr. President actually addressed that issue in Washington and my position is always the same that we are yet to resolve the issue of six girls. 111 girls were kidnapped, 105 were returned and we are busy on daily basis asking and negotiating and asking what happened to those five officially at least and then what is delaying the young girl Leah Sharibu.

“Negotiations with insurgents are quite tortuous and complicated a times but I can assure you we are not leaving her to her fate and those who should are daily busy working on her release.”

“Anybody who negotiates with insurgents and terrorists in the world will know that is not a direct face to face negotiation like we are doing."

Meanwhile, the Anglican Communion, Niger state diocese has decried the continued detention of Leah Sharibu by Boko Haram insurgents saying this is raising more fears that the violent activities of the terrorists and herdsmen is aimed at Islamising Nigeria.

Vanguard reports that Bishop Owen Nwokolo of Niger, who spoke to journalists in Onitsha, said he was not comfortable with the fact that weeks after the release of her colleagues, Leah Sharibu still remained held by Boko Haram insurgents.

The bishop urged Present Muhammadu Buhari to prove Nigerians who have that belief wrong, by ensuring the immediate and unconditional release of the school girl.
