Opposition PDP reportedly considering Dankwanbo against Buhari in 2019

- The governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, is reportedly being mulled as the candidate of the PDP ahead of the 2019 presidential election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly considering the possibility of nominating the governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, as its flag bearer and contender for the presidential seat against Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Vanguard reports that various groups within the party are already rooting for the governor as a consensus can candidate.

The report said this move is geared towards a proposal by a governor from the south-south region saying the party is in desperate need for the PDP to put forward ‘its best face.

The unnamed governor, according to the report, said the PDP was facing a crisis of credibility arising from its poor 16-year performance in power.

“We need a candidate who is not only competent but has the appeal to erase our poor perception from the mind of Nigerians with his impeccable credentials,” the report quoted him as saying.

The report claimed the choice of Dankwambo is being supported by many serving and former PDP governors, ministers and top members of the party.

Before becoming governor, Dankwambo was the accountant-general of Nigeria and is reported to have developed his state since 2011.

The 56-year-old governor currently has former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido, to contend with.

Legit.ng, however reported earlier that the national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, said on Monday, March 12, that the purported nomination of Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, as the presidential candidate of the party was not true.

Daily Trust reports that Secondus made this known while briefing newsmen in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital after a rally of the party.
