Breaking: Senators call for impeachment of Buhari

- Senators are calling for the impeachment of President Buhari

- The Senate accused the president of spending $496 million on acquiring aircraft without the National Assembly approval

Some Nigerian senators have on Thursday, April 26, called for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s for not seeking National Assembly approval before the withdrawal of the $496 million used for the purchase of aircraft from the United States.

Premium Times reports that Senator Matthew Uroghide representing Edo state, moved the motion, claiming that President Buhari’s move was a violation of the constitution and thus, he should face the consequences.

He urged the Senate to invoke Section 143 to start the impeachment process of the president.

Seconding the motion, Chukwuka Utazi spoke in support of the move.

“This is an impeachable offence,” an obviously angry Mr Utazi, said.

The Senate, however, referred to its Judiciary committee for legal advise for the motion raised for the impeachment of the president.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Kingsley Chinda, the chairman House of Representatives committee on public accounts has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has committed an impeachable offense by approving the withdrawal of $462 million to pay for 12 Super Tucano jets.

The president had approved the withdrawal of the fund from the Excess Crude Oil account to be paid to the United States government. He later sent a letter to the National Assembly that the decision was taken without their approval because the deadline given would have elapsed.
