I will not be president forever: Buhari’s speech during visit to Benue

- Those guilty of killings will be punished, President Muhammadu Buhari has promised

- During his visit to Benu state, the president said his administration was doing everything possible to end the recurring attacks

- He said security operatives were working to maintain peace in the country

President Muhammadu Buhari has sympathised with the people of Benue state saying his administration will continue to work towards providing peace to all Nigerians.

The president made this remark during his sympathy visit to Benue state on Monday, March 12, to carry out an assessment of the security situation of the state. In a series of tweets on his official page, President Buhari said all those guilty of perpetuating violence will face the full wrath of the law.

He said: "My message to the people of Benue today, during my visit: We are doing everything possible to end the recurring attacks by armed herdsmen in various parts of Nigeria. I also appealed to them to please give the security agencies a chance to deal with the situation decisively.

"I will not be president forever, Governor Ortom will not be governor forever. Long after our service, farmers and herdsmen in Benue and elsewhere in Nigeria will still exist and will live and work side-by-side. It is our hope that this co-existence will always be a peaceful one.

"There are more than 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, with different cultures and beliefs. God has put us together for a reason, and we can live peacefully together. On our part as government I assure that we will diligently fulfill our duty of security and law enforcement.

"Once again I sympathize with the people of Benue State, and the families of all those who‘ve lost their lives in these attacks. The security agencies will continue to work to protect all Nigerians. And we will not allow anyone who takes the life of a Nigerian to evade justice."

Meanwhile, President Buhari said he was unaware that inspector-general of police, Ibrahim failed to carry out his order when the latter was asked to go to Benue state following killings by suspected herdsmen.

Tribune reports that President Buhari made this comment when he paid a condolence visit to the state.

Buhari said he did the right thing by asking Idris to go to the state “but did not know that he (IG) did not stay in the state.”
