- It was reported that his own dismissal was approved by President Buhari

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has reportedly dismissed its immediate past director-general Ambassador Muhammed Dauda.

Daily Trust reports that Dauda was dismissed through a letter dated March 6 and signed by T.A. Yusuf, on behalf of the director general of the agency.

The agency has been caught in a leadership crisis since the appointment of its new DG, Dr Ahmed Rufai Abubakar by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Daily Trust reports that a security source confirmed the dismissal of Dauda. He said he “was also warned in the letter by the NIA not to engage in anything 'inimical' to the agency’s operations, or he would risk being tried for treason.”

The source reportedly said the dismissal was done without the knowledge of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) but was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. Dauda had reportedly spent 34 years in service before his dismissal.

It will be recalled that a report by Premium Times indicated that the Nigerian Ambassador to Chad, Dauda, went underground, triggering a massive manhunt for him. According to the report, the diplomat went into hiding after claiming his life was in danger following the testimony he gave a House of Representatives committee last month.

The federal government had sometime last year recalled Dauda from his post in N’djamena to take temporary charge of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) after the organisation’s director general, Ayodele Oke, was suspended.
