Delta Airplane catches fire mid-air

- Fire fighters and other emergency aviation officials are placed on standby at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport following a distress call from Delta Airline

- Passengers aboard a Delta airplane are evacuated via the emergency sliding door

The left engine of a plane belonging to Delta Air on Wednesday, February 14, caught fire mid-air and was forced to make an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos shortly after take-off.

Vanguard reports that the pilot of the Delta Air flight DL055 (ATL)ETG, immediately contacted the control tower at the Lagos Airport to prepare for emergency landing.

Legit.ng learnt that following the distress call, fire fighters and all emergency aviation officials were immediately contacted and placed on standby to prevent any disaster.

Reports have it that the plane, however, landed landing successful and all the passengers aboard were quickly evacuated via the emergency sliding door within few minutes.

Although there was no death recorded, some crew members and passengers who were hurt were taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja, Air Force Base Clinic and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Medical Centre treatment.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has dismissed claims by Air Peace that its aircraft was burgled on Thursday, February 8, describing the claim as unfounded.

In a statement signed by NCAA's spokesperson, Sam Adurogboye, the aviation regulatory body stated that their investigation proved that the burglary incident did not occur.

Legit.ng gathered that Adurogboye stated that the aviation security personnel were at the holding point of Runway 18R monitoring the departure of Air Peace and Arik Air aircraft.

According to him, PIC alarm triggered an immediate response and the escort team overtook the Arik aircraft for a more proximate field look and access to the Air Peace aircraft.
