President Buhari, Saraki, others to attend Ekwueme’s burial

- President Muhammadu Buhari is among the dignitaries expected to attend the burial ceremony of the late former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme

- Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki are also expected at the ceremony

- The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, January 31 in Enugu state

President Muhammadu Buhari is among the dignitaries expected to attend the burial ceremony of the late former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme.

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki are also expected at the ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, January 31 in Enugu state.

This was disclosed by a member of the burial committee set up by the South East Governors Forum, Chief Mana Umeh.

Speaking at a press conference in Enugu, Umeh said Ekwueme’s remains would lie in state during the ceremony to be held at the Michael Okpara Square.

According to him, after the Enugu commendation ceremony, the body would leave Enugu the next day, Thursday, February 1 for Awka for another commendation ceremony at the Alex Ekwueme Square.

Thereafter, it will leave for Oko his home town for an all night service of songs while interment takes place the next day, Friday, February 2.

Legit.ng gathered that the burial is jointly organised by the federal government and the five South-east state governors.

The federal government had set up a committee headed by Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Tuesday, December 5 to plan a good burial programme for Ekwueme.

The minister of power, works and housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, minister of information and culture and tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, minister of finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, minister of labour and productivity, Sen. Chris N. Ngige, Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris and the Director General, Department of State Services (DSS), Mallam Lawal Musa Daura are also members of the committee.

Other members include Pastor Goodheart Obi Ekwueme, the secretary to the Anambra state government, Prof. Osita Chukwulobelu and the permanent secretary, general services in the SGF office, Dr. Roy P. Ugo.
