200 people arrested in anti-mafia operation in Italy, Germany

- The Italian police and their German counterpart engaged in a joint anti-mafia operation in Italy and Germany

- About 200 people were arrested in the operation

- The arrested people allegedly belong to a mafia group robbing companies in both Italy and Germany

About 200 members of one of Italy’s most notorious mafia groups were arrested in an operation in Italy and Germany, police said on Tuesday, January 9.

Reuters reports that a statement from the para-military Carabinieri police said the operation had dismantled a major clique of the ‘Ndrangheta’ organized crime group which is based in the southern Calabria region.

Legit.ng gathered that Italian police stated that the operation was carried out jointly with police in Germany.

The police said the notorious mafia group had duped businesses in both countries, particularly those involved in wine, food, garbage collection and funeral services.

The police also revealed that about 50 million euros ($59.79 million) in assets was seized during the operation.

Legit.ng previously reported that investigations by the Daily Express uncovered how a Nigerian mafia group had been assisting pregnant Nigerian women with tips on how to avoid paying for treatment in the UK.

The newspaper reported that Nigerian families were paying up to £10,000 for the deals which included travel packages of flights, flats near UK hospitals, some fake documents, another person’s NHS number or a fake British passport.

The reports stated that despite government clampdown on the illegal trade, unpaid bills from health tourists are soaring. It stated that one Manchester hospital was owed more than £500,000 from one case.
