Police parades suspected fraudsters scamming people with President Buhari’s name

Legit.ng gathered that some fraudsters who have been using President Muhammadu Buhari's name to defraud people were arrested in Akwa Ibom state recently.

According to a reports, 16 suspects (10 men and 6 women) were arrested and paraded for defrauding unsuspecting victims while pretending to be the Nigerian president.

The suspected fraudsters who were caught on June 30, around Atiku Abubakar way in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, were said to have formed a fake group known as "Niger Delta Youths, Women and Security Movement for Buhari”.

The suspects were said to have sold several forms bearing that name to unsuspecting members of the public claiming they were hiring people to become law enforcement officers.

The sum of N199,800 and two forms for 'empowerment and surveillance', were also found on them. The forms were reportedly being sold for N6,000 and N15,000 respectively.

Further investigations revealed that the group which started the 'hiring process' since 2015, promised applicants that they would be trained by the Nigerian Army and would be posted to the other armed forces including the navy, police and DSS adding that they were being recruited to guard the pipelines.

The leader of the group revealed to be one Felix Obonka a Delta state indigene was said to have also told people that they would also own shops at the end of the programme.

DSP Chukwu Ikechukwu, the Akwa Ibom state police spokesperson said:

"They are simply using the name of the President and Commander in-Chief Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, to scam and defraud innocent members of the public as none of the members belong to any registered political party.

The Akwa Ibom state Police Command believes in the sanctity of the law, respect for its citizens in accordance with the tenets of democratic policing. Consequently, the 16 suspects will be arraigned in the court."
