Mother, 22, gives birth to healthy conjoined twins despite doctors advising abortion

- A US mother has given birth to healthy conjoined twins

- Doctors had advised them to terminate the pregnancy but they opted to carry it to full term

- Doctors say the twins do not need to have separation surgery

A 22-year-old mother in Idaho, US, gave birth to healthy conjoined twins in January after defying doctors' advice to terminate her pregnancy.

Scans early in Chelsea Torres' pregnancy revealed that she was carrying conjoined twins. Doctors feared that they might not make it past 11 weeks.

They therefore advised her and her husband Nick, 22, to consider terminating the pregnancy, something they opted against.

Doctors have now assured the proud parents that the twin girls, Callie and Carter, are healthy and do not need immediate separation surgery. They do not share vital organs.

Callie and Carter are omphalo-ischiopagus twins, a rare case. It means they share two legs and one pelvis while having two separate torsos that face each other.

She said: "I'm so happy I didn't terminate Callie and Carter, they are amazing. I knew termination would not happen and I'm glad that little speck of thought I did have, I pushed away. My husband and I are very excited."

The couple, who already have a three-year-old son named Jaysin, have had to adjust to a new parenting experience.

Chelsea said: "Their clothing and car seats are completely different. We have to sew their clothing together and the car seat is custom made."
