An 11-year-old British boy is set to break the world record for being the youngest person ever to conduct a full orchestra.

Mathew Smith will achieve the feat when he leads the Nottingham Symphony Orchestra's performance of Johann Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus on April 2.

The talented boy, who can play multiple instruments including the violin, drums, viola and guitar, will beat the previous record held by another prodigy who led an orchestra in Venezuela at the age of 14.

He says: "I have been rehearsing with the orchestra for a couple of weeks now and it’s sounding really good. There are some difficult parts where the music gets faster so I have to move my arms more but I’m getting the hang of it."

Mathew also says that he can conduct the entire Die Fledermaus piece from memory and that he first listened to it when he was seven years old.

He adds that he was inspired to try his hand at conducting after watching a video of a young child conducting a nine-minute piece.
