Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Ohanaeze Ndigbo was formed in 1976. It is the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, representing Igbo communities in Nigeria and the diaspora.

Evolving from the 1930s Lagos Igbo Union, it promotes unity, cultural preservation, and political advocacy. Led by Senator John Azuta-Mbata in 2025, it’s not a political party but influences Igbo political interests.

The group addresses issues like marginalisation and economic development, though it faces criticism for internal disputes and alleged inefficiency. With chapters in the UK, US, and Asia, it fosters global Igbo identity.

Founding: Began as Igbo Forum in 1976, renamed Ohanaeze Ndigbo in 1979.

Mission: Unites Igbos, preserves culture, and advocates political inclusion.

Global Reach: Chapters in the UK, the US, Asia; supports diaspora Igbo unity.
