WCQ: Sunday Oliseh Details When FIFA Will Take Decision Against South Africa

  • Sunday Oliseh has maintained that South Africa are facing a potential sanction for fielding Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho
  • The Mamelodi Sundowns forward, who had received yellow cards in two prior matches, was ineligible to play in that game
  • Lesotho, Benin, and Nigeria are urging the world's football governing body, FIFA, to take action against South Africa

A former Nigerian international, Sunday Oliseh, has disclosed that South Africa are in trouble for fielding an ineligible player in the World Cup qualifiers.

Teboho Mokoena was in action as Bafana Bafana defeated Lesotho 2-0 back in March, but the Mamelodi Sundowns forward was ineligible to feature in the game.

He had received yellow cards in two previous matches and, consequently, he was to miss their next game in the qualification series.

According to FIFA rules, any team that features an ineligible player will automatically lose the match by three goals.

Opposing teams, Lesotho as well as Benin and Nigeria, are calling on the world's football governing body to sanction South Africa and award the game to Lesotho.

With the qualifiers nearing the end, there are concerns over the imminent FIFA decision, but there is no official statement yet.

South Africa lead the pack with 16 points, but that could drop to 13 if the world's football governing body takes the drastic decision.

Benin Republic are second on the log with 11 points, while Nigeria have 10 points. Rwanda have 8 points, while Lesotho and Zimbabwe are on 6 and 4 points respectively.

Meanwhile, ex-Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh disclosed that it is only a matter of time before FIFA's hammer lands on South Africa.

Oliseh said on Instagram:

"To the best of my knowledge, South Africa is in trouble. The Football Association is responsible to ensure that only the eligible players are fielded.
"If a team fields an ineligible player and the valid protest is upheld, the standard penalty includes the forfeiture of the match.

"The result is typically overturned to a 3-0 defeat for the offending team. Some might wonder, because this is what is creating the buzz now.
"Some might wonder why it has taken so long. It is simply because the process can take weeks to months as FIFA may request additional information from the associations involved."

Action returns to the group on Tuesday, September 9, as Zimbabwe host Rwanda, South Africa host Nigeria, while Benin will take on Lesotho in Abidjan, per Soccernet.

A win for Bafana Bafana over the Super Eagles in Bloemfontein could eventually seal the ticket for the South Africans.
