  • United are now heavily linked with an impressive goalkeeper who is reportedly available for £40 million this summer

English Premier League club Manchester United faced arch-rivals Arsenal in what many have described as a familiar tale of frustration.

Despite outplaying the supposed title contenders at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 17, the Red Devils fell short due to a critical error.

Altay Bayindir performed below average, and his poor goalkeeping allowed Riccardo Calafiori to head in from a corner, sealing the match’s outcome.

The Red Devils showed a glimpse of improvement in the attack from last season, with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo threatening the Gunners.

However, they could not penetrate as Arsenal’s defenders were resolute, leaving Ruben Amorim's side frustrated.

Donnarumma linked with Manchester United

They will need to shop for a proven shot-stopper, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, reportedly available for £40million.

The 26-year-old is seeking an increase from his £210,000-per-week salary, and now he has been sidelined by Luis Enrique.

Donnarumma has also been linked with Manchester City, but after spending £200million on attackers, United are now focused on sales.

Marcus Rashford’s loan to Barcelona is the only departure so far, with no buyers for Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, or Tyrell Malacia.

Andre Onana was on the bench in their season opener, and his future is uncertain as he missed pre-season due to a hamstring injury.

Amorim decided against naming him in the squad, but said via SunSport:

Man Utd to offload 6 players?

  1. Andre Onana
  2. Antony
  3. Jadon Sancho
  4. Alejandro Garnacho
  5. Tyrell Malacia
  6. Rasmus Hojlund

The sale of the six mentioned players could provide the club with the financial flexibility to pursue Donnarumma.

Collectively, these players earn £685,000 per week, so offloading them would free up roughly twice the amount needed to meet Donnarumma's desired salary.

"Manchester United are open to making changes in their goalkeeping department, and Onana is aware.
"There is a chance to bring in a Donnarumma or Martinez, one of the best keepers in the world, and United are tempted"
