Liverpool's new signings, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, combined for the opening goal and Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised for the Eagles.
Another new signing, Jeremie Frimpong, put the Merseyside club back ahead, and when they appeared to be winning it, Ismailia Sarr equalised for Palace.
According to Sun Sport, the match went straight to penalties after 90 minutes, as it has always been since the rules were changed in 1993, and Crystal Palace won 3-2.
Liverpool missed three spot kicks, including Mohamed Salah, who was off target, while Dean Henderson saved Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott’s attempts.
Alisson Becker also saved Arsenal target Eberechi Eze’s attempt, but in the end, Oliver Glasner’s side prevailed and won their second trophy in three months.
Community Shield prize money
According to Express UK, unlike other domestic competitors in English football, the Community Shield has no financial reward for the winner. Its only compensation is lifting the trophy.
The money raised from the fixture, which comes from ticket sales, sponsorships and television revenue, is split between charities and redistributed among the football pyramid.
The match, which was previously named the Charity Cup, was created to raise funds for charitable causes in England and not for the benefit of the participating clubs.

Glasner speaks about Palace's European verdict
Crystal Palace qualified for next season's UEFA Europa League after winning the FA Cup, but were kicked out because of a multi-club saga involving Olympique Lyon.
Former owner John Textor had shares in both clubs above the threshold allowed by UEFA, and hence the English side were dropped into the Conference League.
The club have launched an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and ahead of the latest verdict, Oliver Glasner shares his thoughts about the case.
The Austrian responded “no” when asked if he would trade today's win for winning the case, adding that he would take what they can control.
“We can't influence it, so we don't think about it. Tomorrow afternoon, we will schedule the rest of August. No influence, so I don't think about it,” he said.
Supercomputer predicts Premier League winner
Legit.ng reported that a supercomputer predicted Liverpool to retain the Premier League title next season after reinforcing their squad with over £300 million.
The loss in the Community Shield may have added to their advantage, as only one past winner of the trophy in the last 14 seasons eventually won the league.
