Jose Mourinho reacts as Brighton hand Spurs stunning defeat

Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of returning to winning ways were dashed on Sunday night, January 31, after they suffered a 1-0 win to struggling Brighton and Hove Albion at Falmer Stadium.

Spurs were desperate to bounce back against Brighton following their midweek disappointing defeat to reigning champions Liverpool.

However, Brighton, who are fighting for survival put up a spirited performance to silence the north Londoners as they bagged all the three points at home.

Leandro Trossard's first half goal proved to be the difference, with Spurs, who were without Harry Kane struggled to break the Seagull's solid backline.

The hosts had a brighter start into the encounter and should have scored an opener in the third minute but were unlucky after Gross's effort rattled the post.

It was after the threat Spurs looked to have settled into the match, only for Trossard to break the deadlock in the 17th minute with a well taken free-kick.

With the visitors struggling in attack, Jose Mourinho was forced into a tactical tweak, withdrawing Gareth Bale for Lucas Moura.

However, the change was not enough to held Spurs score an equaliser as Graham Potter's men frustrated them to march to victory.

The defeat leaves Spurs in sixth with 33 points, a massive six off the top four. Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho said via Sky Sports:

"We've had five defeats in 30 matches so we can look at it in a different perspective.

"Every team in the Premier League has these ups and these downs. Of course now, we're in a difficult moment with results, injuries and self-esteem. A team with confidence is much better than a team with sadness. At this time, we have all these problems which sooner or later will blow over.

"At the end of the season, we'll see where we are in the league and with the cup games that we're going to play."

They will be looking to turn the tide on Thursday, February 4, when they battle rivals Chelsea in the London derby.

Brighton, meanwhile, will continue their survival push when they travel to Anfield to take on a resurgent Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Harry Kane has been hit with an injury during Tottenham's loss to Liverpool and he is expected to be out of action for up to six weeks.

The Englishman injured his two ankles from Thiago and Henderson's challenges during the course of the first 45 minutes.
