FCT, Abuja - Several Nigerians on social media have criticised Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, over a controversial tweet.

Legit.ng reports that Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, turned 65 on Sunday, September 21, and received congratulatory messages from many politicians.

In a tweet on Sunday night, September 21, Obi joined millions of Nigerians in wishing the First Lady a happy birthday. Before her anniversary, the president's wife asked well-wishers to redirect their gifts towards the completion of the long-abandoned National Library project. Reacting, the former Anambra state governor said although the First Lady's call looks noble and selfless on the surface, "beneath it lies an indictment of our nation."

Many Nigerians criticise Peter Obi

The presidential hopeful questioned why the First Lady must "beg for charity" to build the National Library, Abuja, which he called "the very temple of knowledge." However, Obi's "we are finished" choice of words was strongly fumed at by many Nigerians. A few commenters sided with him.

Legit.ng captured some comments on X (formerly Twitter) below:

Idris Oni wrote:

"The "We" belongs to you and your friends. So, yes, 'you are finished'."

Olúseun Felix commented:

"@PeterObi, kindly personalise the words, “You are finished.”
"I’ve never seen an immature old man like you. The desperation in you, finding all avenues to tarnish the image of the country, is so disgusting. Must you talk all the time?
"What is the colour of your problem?
"So petty that you live on SM and spew nonsense every time.
"What good does one expect from a fool that took advice from a mad man in Upper Iweka?

2027 presidency: Atiku, El-Rufai meet as details of fresh plot to sack Tinubu emerge

"Coming online to show your pettiness all the time, if you had gotten a sane man as your advisor, he would have told you long ago that you’re an embarrassment to yourself and family.
"A serial liar and pretender is who you are.
"Anyone taking you seriously needs psychiatric examination."

Adewale Fajana commented:

"This is a most irresponsible tweet from a supposed presidential hopeful.
"Whoever wrote this for you and you who didn’t have the wisdom to read the room."

@davidsalt_ said:

"Whoever is curating these “banger” tweets is doing more harm than good. The current administration is very easy to criticise — there are countless loopholes to point at. Sadly, this one, in my opinion, isn’t one of them.
"A simple birthday wish to her as a former senator would have been enough. Then, move on to another pressing issue that truly deserves attention.
"Clearly, these tweets don’t reflect PO’s personality."

"It’s pretty obvious that Tinubu and his household are really out to deal with Nigeria and Nigerians. All the mountainous loans they keep taking and squandering are not enough. They’ve introduced a cumbersome tax law to finish Nigerians, yet they seem unsatisfied. Tinubu has now resorted to begging for urgent 2k through his wife in the name of birthday celebration.
"Tinubu is running an Almajiri government - operation beg and squander.
"If they’re not going to World bank today with their begging bowls to beg for loans, they’re on their way to IMF tomorrow with their begging bowls. If they’re not doing any of that, they’re begging Nigerians to buy the President’s wife a birthday cake."
