Peter Obi's Supporters Make Demands From Jonathan After Closed-Door Meeting

Supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, under the umbrella of the Obidient Movement, have told former President Goodluck Jonathan to step down for their candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The demand came after Obi and Jonathan met behind a closed-door in Abuja on Thursday, September 11, amid the move by the opposition leaders to come together and form a coalition against President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

Obidient speaks as Jonathan, Obi meet
Speaking about the meeting, the Obidient Movement leaders made it clear that the former president should step aside for the former Anambra governor in the interest of national progress and fairness.
Daily Trust reported that the national coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, noted that though the two men are respected leaders, Obi has continued to be the preferred candidate of millions of Nigerians who wanted a new direction.
He added that Jonathan and Obi "have been friends for a long time", and that the closed-door meeting was to allow them to discuss rescuing Nigeria.
Reiterating the position of the Obidient Movement, Tanko said that it would be a great thing if the former president maintained his elder statesman status, which he is known for, adding that "he has done his best" when he was in office. He noted that Jonathan is highly respected, and it's his time "for him to support his brother.”
Obi, Jonathan's meeting
After their meeting on Thursday, Obi announced the development in a social media post, where he described the former president as his leader, statesman and elder brother. He also disclosed that they discussed issues around the country and the state of the nation.
However, Obi did not mention if their discussion touched on controversies around the 2027 presidential election. The meeting came at a time when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it was considering Obi or Jonathan as its 2023 presidential candidate in the plot to sack President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election
Also, the meeting held days after was reported to have allegedly started planning to contest the 2027 presidential election, despite public rejection of the ambition from his wife, Patience.
The meeting also came at a time when the former president was said to have kick-started his campaigns to secure the PDP presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

El-Rufai speaks on preferred presidential candidate
Legit.ng earlier reported that former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai had said that he has no preferred presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.
The former governor made the clarification in Imo, stating that no government has worsened the country in two years like the APC's President Tinubu.
