2027 Election: Festus Keyamo Shares What Would Happen if PDP Woos Back Peter Obi

  • APC chieftain Festus Keyamo said "principled" members of the Obidient Movement will oppose Peter Obi if he rejoins the PDP
  • According to Keyamo, Obidients will see such a move as a betrayal of the ideals and aspirations of millions of Nigerians who believe in Obi
  • Keyamo recalled that Obi had branded the two political parties that have governed Nigeria since 1999, APC and PDP, "structure of criminality"

FCT, Abuja - Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, on Sunday, August 31, said if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) woos back presidential hopeful Peter Obi, the party risks losing the 2027 election.

Legit.ng recalls that Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state and chairman of the PDP Governors Forum recently said recently that the PDP is considering Obi, the 2023 candidate of the Labour Party (LP), for its 2027 presidential ticket.

The governor’s comment came a few days after the PDP zoned its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.

Obi was a presidential aspirant of the PDP in 2022, but later resigned from the platform before the presidential primary election, saying there were practices in the party that were inconsistent with his “belief and persona.”

The former Anambra state governor defected to the LP, where he later emerged as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

Keyamo assesses PDP's position

Commenting on the PDP's zoning decision, Keyamo, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), explained that if the opposition party decides to field an 'attractive southern candidate', no other region of the country will vote for a fresh candidate from that region "who would be eligible for fresh two terms in office". Incumbent president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a southerner, from Lagos state.

Keyamo said any candidate needs a majority of at least three to four geopolitical regions in Nigeria to win the presidency, warning Obi that he may lose the support of his staunch supporters, popularly called Obidients, if he decides to go back to the PDP.
