Rivers Emergency Rule: Ibas Gets Fresh Message Ahead of LG Election

The National Patriotic Front (NPF) has commended Rivers state Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), for restoring peace and promoting transparent governance under emergency rule.

In a statement signed by its president, Marcus Dakas, the group described Ibas as the “saving grace” as the state prepares for its 30 August 2025 local government elections.

Legit.ng reports that the development comes five months after Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and members of the state legislature were suspended for six months.

“The National Patriotic Front salutes the courage, clarity and sense of duty that Admiral Ibas has brought to Rivers State,” Dakas said.

Group: Security achievements under emergency rule

The NPF pointed to improved security as the hallmark of Ibas’ administration, praising his introduction of joint patrols that quelled violent crime and communal unrest in Port Harcourt and surrounding areas, Nation reported.

“The Sole Administrator has succeeded in bringing tremendous peace to Rivers State. Markets are bustling again, businesses are reopening with confidence, and residents are experiencing a sense of safety long absent from their daily lives. This renewed atmosphere is one of the most profound achievements of his administration,” Dakas noted.

Commitment to credible elections

With the elections just weeks away, the NPF stressed that stability was vital for credible grassroots polls, Punch reported.

“By empowering RVSIEC and fixing a date for grassroots elections, Admiral Ibas has shown his sincerity of purpose. He has no hidden agenda but is only a steward of this transition. His commitment to democratic restoration should reassure Rivers people and silence the cynics,” the statement read.

Infrastructure and accountability drive

Beyond security, the group also lauded Ibas for pushing ahead with key projects. These include the reconstruction of the Rivers state House of Assembly complex, the completion of the Mother and Child Hospital in Port Harcourt, and insistence on accountability in the ₦150bn Port Harcourt Ring Road project.

“The endorsement from the federal legislature is a strong signal that the emergency administration is not only succeeding but has achieved its goal. We urge Rivers people to sustain their cooperation with the Sole Administrator in the months ahead,” the NPF added.

Federal lawmakers commend Ibas

The group highlighted the recent oversight visit by the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers state, led by House Leader Professor Julius Ihonvbere, which praised Ibas’ stewardship and pledged support for democratic restoration.

Rivers: Ibas, RSIEC dragged to court

Previously, Legit.ng reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Sole Administrator of Rivers state, and Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas have been dragged to court over the planned conduct of the local government election Admiral Ibas’s government has fixed August 30, 2025, to conduct local government elections in the state.

The plaintiffs, Fredrick Ededeh, Benita Samuel, Jane Madubuike, Boma Aggo, and Comfort Agbom, all indigenes of Rivers State, dragged Tinubu and Ibas before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1144/2025.
