2027 Election: Amaechi Vows to Eradicate Corruption in First Month as President or Resign
- Rotimi Amaechi has pledged to eliminate corruption within his first month in office if elected president in 2027 or resign if he fails
- The former transportation minister criticised the current government’s handling of petrol subsidy funds, accusing officials of misappropriation and excess
- Amaechi, now part of a major opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), promises to redirect subsidy savings to reduce poverty and boost national development
Rotimi Amaechi, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape and former governor of Rivers State, has made a bold declaration regarding his stance on corruption.
Speaking during a live conversation on X Space on Saturday, Amaechi stated that corruption would be eradicated within the first month of his presidency if elected under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.

“So, I will eliminate corruption. Trust me, the first month of my being in office, corruption will disappear. If it doesn’t disappear, I will tender my resignation letter, and I will leave. I’m not joking,” he said.
Amaechi’s remarks come amid growing public frustration over governance and accountability in Nigeria. He criticised the current administration’s handling of funds saved from the removal of petrol subsidy, alleging that the benefits are being diverted to a select few.
“The problem of the current government is that the benefit of the subsidy is shared between three or four persons at the federal level and the governors. And the governors are holding beach parties, having fun with young girls,” he said.
Amaechi opposes petrol subsidy reintroduction
Amaechi also voiced strong opposition to the reintroduction of petrol subsidy, describing it as economically damaging. He argued that while the removal of the subsidy was necessary, its implementation had failed to benefit ordinary Nigerians.
“I won’t bring back subsidy, that’s impossible, because the situation is bad in terms of the economy of Nigeria,” he said. “But I have also said that the subsidy removal is not successful. Money is going into private pockets.”
He promised to redirect the savings from subsidy removal towards national development and poverty alleviation.
“I will ensure the outcome of the removal of the subsidy is put back in the hands and pockets of Nigerians. If that happens, it will reduce poverty, and we would have capacity to purchase,” he added.
ADC coalition gains momentum ahead of 2027 elections
In June, Amaechi joined forces with other major opposition leaders, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, to form a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The alliance is expected to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.
Amaechi has expressed willingness to serve only one term if he secures the ADC presidential ticket, signalling a commitment to swift and impactful governance.
“It will not happen with me; I will supervise the government. Honestly, I will supervise the government,” he said.
